Ideas for church web-portal
Avengers,
Our church has set up a web-portal as a communications tool for members to use. It uses a framework called "DotNetNuke" that allows for a lot of customization by people (like me) with very little technical know-how.
I've been asked to come up with some ideas to make the portal as useful (and fun) as possible (but without a lot of maintenance).
What sort of functions would cause you to visit your church's web portal on a weekly basis?
Verse of the week?
Question of the week?
Deep thoughts?
Prayer request lists?
Recipe sharing?
Please let me know what would interest you.

"Get out of church free" cards? Coupons for a free double latte mocha frapp whip??
If your pastor consistantly gives a good word...maybe notes from his messages?
Pictures of people...everyone likes to see themselves in pictures. (something about the vanity of mankind)
What is the purpose for the web portal?? Are you building a web portal just to have one? (and as a result, are looking for things to justify having one) Or do you have a need that only a web portal can adress? Besides overloading Shawn with even MORE computer stuff?
The gentleman who set it up believes that it will become a valuable tool to allow Christians to network. First, he wants to see if it will work within a single church. Then he wants other churches to be able to network with each other.
I'm trying to help "jumpstart" the process by generating interest inside our own church.

Can we post living streaming video of Aaron eating a twinkie? I always thought that was fascinating.
Maybe you want to set up a networking site separate from your portal.
If your church portal will have a private area, just for church members, it might help if members could post resources and needs, which would facilitate sharing within the church community. For example, if Fred has a table saw, and Jimmy needs a table saw to fix his garage, then you've got some real networking going on.
